An Analysis of a Method to Estimate the Effect on Wind on Natural Ventilation in Large Spaces

Johansson, Nils LU orcid and Karlsson, Björn (2019) 15th International Conference and Exhibitionon Fire Science and Engineering, Interflam 2019
Abstract
The influence of wind is only occasionally accounted for in fire safety engineering, still the effect of wind on, for example, the performance of a smoke management system can be large. A simple analytical method to account for the effect of wind on mass flow through horizontal openings for natural ventilation is compared to results from CFD simulations in this paper. It is seen that the correspondence between the two methods decreases with increased wind speed, and is overall limited for wind speeds above 2 m/s. The influence of wind on the exterior and interior of a building is complex and the simplifications included in the analytical method might be too extensive for the method to be useful. However, the result of this study is... (More)

However, the result of this study is dependent on the geometry of the studied cases and there might be other situations where the analytical method could be useful. (Less)
