- The legal status of land had important consequences in pre-industrial societies, and Sweden was no different. Here land was broadly divided into the three categories of free-hold, crown land and noble land, which, in turn, were divided into several sub-categories, each with its own legal and practical consequences. In this paper I present, for the first time, a comprehensive dataset for 17 such sub-categories, for the period 1718-1865. The data describe how much of the land, in terms of tax-assessment units (mantal), belonged to each of these categories.
