- This introduction opens the special issue on “Old Yiddish Literature: Historical and Cultural Perspectives,” which consists of five peer-reviewed articles, an interview, a book review, a report about a critical edition, and a creative work.
It previews how these diverse contributions expand our knowledge of Old Yiddish
literature, ranging from the epic to the ethical will, from the religious hymn to the
mayse, while also shedding light on broader fields of inquiry, such as the study of
popular culture, intercultural exchange, and gender. The introduction further
provides a condensed overview of the history of Old Yiddish literature, as well as of
the history of scholarship about it, in order to orient readers less...
