Researching Minor Immigrant Cinema : Latin American Filmmaking in Swedish Exile
(2015) ECREA Film Studies Section Conference, 2015- Abstract
- The aim of the paper is to give an account of a research project concerning immigrant filmmakers in Sweden from the early 1970s to the early 1990s. We have been researching the archives of the Stockholm film workshop (“Filmverkstan”) and found out at an early stage that the workshop – administered as a cooperation between the Swedish Film Institute and the Swedish broadcast organisation – turned into a haven for political refugees during the early 1970s, primarily Latin Americans. Most of the films produced in this context were non-professional or semi-professional. Within the framework of the concept minor cinema we have tried to map these films, and discuss them in relation to the existing historiographies – where they have been excluded. They are invisible in Swedish film history as well as in Latin American (foremost Chilean) film history. We will discuss the historiographical and institutional consequences of this invisibility, but also point out some practical aspects of the research, concerning among other things archiving. (Less)
