Crack paths in a weak elastic layer covering a beam

Abstract
Experiments have been performed on cracks growing in a weak elastic layer bonded to a stiffer beam. The plane of the initial crack is perpendicular to the interface between the layer and the beam (see Fig. 1). The applied load is initially mode I. A frequent observation is that the crack deflects following a curved path. Finally the crack runs almost parallel with the interface. Different ratios of layer heights are studied. The conditions for crack deflection are investigated, using finite element calculations verified by photoelastic data. A pure mode I path seems to be followed. A simple beam model shows that the crack after deflection will either approach the interface, find a steady-state path in the weaker material parallel to the... (More)

A simple beam model shows that the crack after deflection will either approach the interface, find a steady-state path in the weaker material parallel to the interface or return to the stress free surface of the layer to form a fragment.
