Abstract
This timely edited volume gather’s a number of Sweden’s leading historians who specialize on the profound transformations of the late 20th Century. Each chapter starts from an image, and at the center is the “market turn” – a multifaceted, but at the same time distinct historical process through which the market as an institution, an ideal, and a metaphor has become a focal point of social life. How did this happen?

The market turn left a big mark on Swedish politics, but it also changed people’s everyday lives, their language use, and frame of reference. The book shows that the market cannot be understood as a monolith – there have been several different market concepts and visions in circulation. Some overlapping and mutually... (More)

How did this happen?

The market turn left a big mark on Swedish politics, but it also changed people’s everyday lives, their language use, and frame of reference. The book shows that the market cannot be understood as a monolith – there have been several different market concepts and visions in circulation. Some overlapping and mutually reinforcing, others in direct competition. Together they have interacted with different political and intellectual traditions, from the “people’s home capitalism” of the Welfare state era to libertarian and neoliberal understandings.

The edited volume sheds light on dramatic ruptures, but also on important continuities. The book reveals the often overlooked social, political, and cultural alliances of the market turn, and renders clear the sometimes large differences between the actor’s intentions and the actual consequences. Abstract (Swedish)

(More)
