The city as a symbolic and pragmatic problem.

Abstract
In this paper, a view will be given on the establishment of large scale science facilities in Lund, Sweden, recognizing some of the recent political changes of this region around the end of 20th century and start of the 21st. During this time the well-renowned social democratic welfare politics in Sweden gave way to a more pragmatic third way politics with clear marks of a neoliberalist housing market economy. Since historically oriented semiotic perspectives of cities (Lotman 1990; Sonesson and Sandin 2016) are not primarily detailed historical accounts but rather proposals of how to study the meaning (of the life of) cities, notions such as “cultural encounters”, “formation of space”, and “the alter/alius dilemma” become important for an...
