Calculation of a Buildings Recycling Capacity Concerning Building Materials and Embodied Energy

Thormark, Catarina LU (1996) International Symposium of CIB W67: ENERGY and MASS FLOW in the LIFE CYCLE of BUILDINGS p.329-334
Abstract
Calculations of the total energy use for buildings in a life-cycle perspective have hitherto tended to omit the phase after demolition. This paper presents a parametric study of a one-family house to determine its ‘recycling capacity’, the possible energy savings by recycling the building materials after demolition. Estimating the ‘recycling capacity’ is of importance both to give a life-cycle perspective for a building’s use of energy in and to provide guidelines for an appropriate design for recycling. Results indicate that the net use of energy is far more affected by the form of recycling than by the energy used for production. This means that the construction’s demountability in combination with the quality and service life of the... (More)
