Abstract
This article examines, firstly, how legal and safe pathways, in particular resettlement and humanitarian corridors, are regulated in French legislation and how they are implemented in practice, and secondly, the implications of this regulation and implementation for the promise of legal pathways to offer regular entry for asylum purposes.

Using a legal and policy approach, our research shows that there is no or insufficient legal regulation of legal pathways in French legislation. This fact allows for flexibility in practice that suits the different parties involved in the implementation process. Flexibility can also be seen as an advantage that makes legal pathways possible in a politically conflictual context. However, in the absence of clear regulations, there are no guarantees of predictability and continuity of the procedure, both for the beneficiaries of these pathways and for the organizations that implement them. Furthermore, this situation does not help to reduce the fragmentation of legal pathways, which raises the question of the desirability of regulating them not only in France, but also more broadly.
