- Abstract
- The publication (originally an M.A. thesis at the Catholic University of Lublin) analyzes and interprets the imagery of the mosaics covering the floor of the northern aula of the paleochristian basilica. The latter was uncovered at the beginning of the 20th century under the Patriarchal Basilica of Aquileia. The iconography of animals depicted on the mosaics is unparalleled and has been a subject of different interpretations for the period of the last hundred years. This book reads the imagery in the light of Christian and pagan sources discussing the symbolical meanings of animals, inlcuding the Church Fathers, Physiologus, Aelian et al.
