Abstract
The historical archaeology of early modern churches and
chapels in northern Sweden in general and in Norrbotten in
particular is an understudied field of research. The purpose
of this paper is to survey the breadth and variation of the
churches and chapels of the Norrbotten region from the late
medieval period to the eighteenth century, with focus on the
seventeenth century. In particular the church at Silbojokk
silver works in the Arjeplog region is discussed in its indus
trial and social context. The paper proposes more historical
archaeological efforts concerning the church and chapels of
northern Sweden in the future for a deeper understanding
the making of modern Scandinavia.
