This project presents If on a Winter’s Night an Architect, an artistic research investigation developed through an intensive design workshop at Politecnico di Milano (MInDS, February 2026). The work positions the workshop as a research device that reorganizes the conditions under which architecture is produced.
Through a structured sequence of daily exercises, the project displaces conventional roles, compresses time, and alternates constraints, exposing architectural practice as a process of decision-making, negotiation, and reconfiguration. Rather than producing a final design, the work makes visible how architectural form emerges through iteration and interruption.
The research draws on references such as Italo Calvino, Michel Foucault, and John Hejduk, translating narrative structures, systems of classification, and personal universes into operational frameworks. A system of binary choices generates parallel trajectories, producing a provisional taxonomy of architectural positions rather than a unified method.
The resulting models, texts, and logbooks function as traces of a process unfolding in real time. The project argues for an understanding of architecture as an open-ended practice in which meaning is produced through displacement, collective action, and continuous transformation. The workshop operates simultaneously as the site and the instrument of research. (Less)
