- Regional researchers have extensively debated contradictions of identity-based regionalism and politically initiated regionalisation. Works addressing the spatial imaginaries of state-led regional institutionalisation processes have since emerged. Sometimes neglected, however, is theoretical attention to what I suggest are acts of counter-institutionalisation: attempts to destabilise dominant regional representations. This paper therefore advances the conceptual debate of ‘bottom-up’ mobilisation within the framework of regional institutionalisation.
