Abstract
The case presents the Itajuru, a complementary municipal currency in the City of Cabo Frío used in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The reader gains insight into the political and economic context in which the Brazilian municipal currencies are introduced, as well as the trade-offs of the various options for designing and governing a municipal currency. The case concludes by presenting students with the design decisions that the new elected major of Cabo Frío, José Bonifacio, faces in his efforts to introduce the currency to the city.
