Abstract

Lymphedema leads to lymph accumulation and adipose tissue deposition. When the lymph has been removed by combined physiotherapy and there still is a significant excess volume, the remaining swelling comprises adipose tissue. Thus, in order to completely reduce the excess volume, the fat needs to be removed with liposuction followed by the use of compression garments. Liposuction is the only method that can successfully normalize a chronic large non-pitting lymphedema. Long-term follow-up shows no recurrence.
