Quality of life in patients with Dercum’s disease : Before and after liposuction
(2016) p.895-905- Abstract
Dercum’s disease is a rare disease characterized by chronic pain (>3 months) in the adipose tissue, generalized overweight, and a number of associated symptoms. The pain is often disabling and resistant to traditional analgesics. Liposuction of Dercum’s disease was first described in 1987, and two prospective controlled studies have demonstrated that it can give pain relief and improve quality of life. Most patients with generalized diffused form and juxta-articular form of Dercum’s disease experience some pain relief after liposuction, but it is impossible to determine who will have a substantial effect of the treatment. Patients with nodular forms of Dercum’s disease are better treated with excisions. Based on the individual... (More)

Based on the individual patient, careful preoperative evaluation and preoperative counselling and risk stratification is paramount to deceide the best treatment.
