Atomic utopias in Egypt: intellectual thought and popular science, 1945-1950

Abstract
High-modernist imagination was inherently universalistic since it provided for the blanket implementation of ‘scientific’ solutions irrespective of local specificities. Nevertheless, it took distinctive forms in nations which were in the midst of anti-colonial struggles. The atomic bombings of Japan in August 1945 thrust the world into a period of uncertainty; in places like Egypt, lying on the cusp of decolonisation, this resulted in an ephemeral moment that contained unique conditions of possibility and imaginability.
