Akerman, H. Jonas LU (2026) 1.
Abstract
The book is a summary of excursion guides for the Lund University course NGEA 04 “Ecosystem analysis”—a field course week held on Öland 2000 to 2025. The guide serves as an introduction and overview of basic information about certain physical geographical environments, features, and general physiographic and ecological traits of southern Öland. Primarily, it offers a general introduction to the island's unique environmental and physiographic characteristics. The excursion and this guide may also serve as a starting point and resource for others visiting Öland for different purposes who desire a broader and deeper understanding of the island. The material is not purely academic but may appeal to anyone interested in nature who wants to... (More)

The material is not purely academic but may appeal to anyone interested in nature who wants to learn more before or during a visit to Öland. It can also inspire further research and reading.
The first part emphasises the abiotic components, geology, soils, organic soils, hydrography, geomorphology, and the former postglacial landscape development and its contemporary tracks and signs in the landscape. In the second part, which includes a menu of excursion sites, we describe how to read the landscape and its components, observing everything from geology and soils to land use, human activity, birds, and bees.
