Abstract

Carl Johan Schlyter was the first modern Swedish legal historian and served as a professor of legal history at Lund University from 1840 to 1876. Schlyter also wrote a Sunday catechism for his children, which he published in 1880. Schlyter was deeply involved in conflicts with representatives of liberal theology. He is an important example of the Scandinavian Christian jurists who devoted themselves to theological discourses in the nineteenth century-a period when conservative and liberal thought clashed over questions of religious freedom.
