Nordic Ecohorror : Naturecultures and Feminine Monstrosity in Contemporary Nordic Literature and Film

Staugaard Kolbeck, Julie LU (2026) In Critica Litterarum Lundensis
Abstract
This dissertation examines the emergence of Nordic ecohorror as a contemporary genre and mode that brings ecological disruption, feminine monstrosity, and Nordic exceptionalist imaginaries into critical dialogue. Focusing on literature, film, and television from across the Nordic region, it explores how ecohorrific narratives challenge conventional distinctions between nature and culture, human and nonhuman, past and present, body and environment.

Combining ecocritical and new materialist approaches with monster theory and affect theory, the study investigates how feminine monstrosity functions as a critical site for negotiating Anthropocene-patriarchal anxieties. Through textual analyses and an empirical reading study, it traces... (More)
This dissertation examines the emergence of Nordic ecohorror as a contemporary genre and mode that brings ecological disruption, feminine monstrosity, and Nordic exceptionalist imaginaries into critical dialogue.

Through textual analyses and an empirical reading study, it traces a distinct Nordic ecology characterised by transcorporeal entanglements, affective atmospheres, and historical hauntings, while demonstrating how Nordic ecohorror exposes cultural assumptions about gender, nature, and national identity.

The dissertation finds that Nordic ecohorror operates simultaneously as a distinctive aesthetic mode, cultural critique, and an alternative ecological awareness. By unsettling ideals of purity, pastoral harmony, and human mastery, these narratives reveal the complex naturecultural entanglements that shape contemporary Nordic societies and their responses to planetary change.
