On Phlebotomy by Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyāʾ al-Rāzī : A Bilingual Edition of Maqāla fī l-Faṣd and Maʾamar baHaqqaza

al-Rāzī, Abū Bakr Muḥammad Ibn Zakariyyāʼ (2026) In Islamic Philosophy, Theology and Science. Texts and Studies 136.
Abstract
On Phlebotomy invites you into the world of medieval medicine through the practice of phlebotomy. This bilingual edition presents Maqāla fī l-Faṣd and its medieval Hebrew translation, Maʾamar baHaqqaza, attributed to the Persian physician Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyāʾ al-Rāzī (d. 925). Divided into two parts, the volume provides a critical edition, English translation, and commentary for both works. It explores the art of phlebotomy together with broader aspects of care: diet, aftercare, and complementary treatments. Bridging disciplines and languages, this edition offers an accessible resource for historians of medicine, philologists, and curious readers alike.
