- At the Museum of World Culture (former Etnografiska Museet i Göteborg) there is an archaeological collection from the Santa Maria and Calchaqui Valleys of north-western Argentina, which came to the museum in 1930. In this article we will focus on six well-preserved objects with provenience from Quilmes and La Quebrada del Carmen in the Santa Maria Valley. In addition to the good conservation of the artefacts and the fact that they are dated to 2,500-3,000 BP, we have also chosen them for their contextual information. The Santa Maria period (Regional Development Period AD 1,000-1,480) is the last prehistoric period before the Spanish Conquest and is well known. Regarding the periods before Santa Maria, on the contrary, knowledge is lacking. Therefore, the aim of this article is to present new results, based upon our work with these specific museum objects. This, in turn, will contribute to the investigations performed at present by Argentinian scholars on earlier periods in the Santa Maria Valley area.
