Distribution of chylomicron choletseryl ester between parenchymal and Kupffer cells of rat liver

Nilsson, Åke LU and Zilversmit, Donald (1971) In Biochimica et Biophysica Acta 248(1). p.137-142
Abstract
Kupffer cells and parenchymal cells of rat liver were isolated shortly after a single intravenous injection, or a constant infusion, of either thoracic duct lymph or isolated chylomicrons. The uptake of labeled free and esterified chylomicron cholesterol by the two cell types was compared to that of colloidal chromic [32P] phosphate. On the average, only about 6% of the cholesteryl ester of the chylomicrons taken up by liver was found m Kupffer cells. The chylomicron cholesteryl ester concentration (per mg N) in isolated parenchymal cells was equal to, or greater than, that of whole liver. The findings suggest that chylomicron remnants are removed from the circulation primarily by the parenchymal cells of the liver.
