Abstract
This introductory chapter establishes the theoretical and methodological framework for examining the profound transformations that occurred across the western provinces of the Roman Empire during the Augustan period. The volume explores these changes through the lens of landscape archaeology, considering landscapes as complex social constructs that reflect and integrate multiple factors—social, economic, political, and ideological. The chapter outlines three key facets that provide coherence to the volume: the methodological approach centred on landscape studies, the temporal scope focusing on the Augustan Revolution, and the geographical framework encompassing the western provinces. These elements frame the examination of how Augustus' reforms reshaped provincial territories through various means, including road construction, military reorganisation, urban development, and economic restructuring. The volume is organised into four thematic sections: Connectivity Landscapes, Military Landscapes, Rural Landscapes, and Provincial Landscapes, each exploring different aspects of territorial transformation under Augustus. Through diverse case studies, the contributors employ multidisciplinary approaches—including material analysis, GIS techniques, and theoretical examination of textual sources—to investigate how Augustan policies fundamentally altered the structure of the Roman Empire and impacted local communities. This approach enables a nuanced understanding of the tension between overarching Imperial guidelines and their varied manifestations across different environmental contexts, whilst highlighting the diverse responses of local communities to these changing circumstances. The chapter argues that examining landscapes alongside other aspects of material culture provides crucial insights into the magnitude and impact of Augustan policy on provincial territories. (Less)
