Abstract
The article deals mainly with the history of astrology and astral divination in South Asia and, to some extent, with the development of astronomy and calendaric systems in the same region. Fundamental concepts of Indian astrology and their relations to other religious doctrines are discussed in some detail, while variant traditions are touched on, along with the influence of medieval Perso-Arabic teachings and encounters with western modernity.
