On-demand public transport - the future of public transport or the emperor’s new clothes?

Pettersson-Löfstedt, Fredrik LU orcid (2020) p.150-159
Abstract

At the moment, there is a great interest in new public transport solutions that take advantage of technological advances to better match demand and supply. Basically, this is based on the idea of demand responsive transport (DRT), which has developed since the 1970s. The chapter provides an overview of the characteristics of new, technology enhanced DRT services, here referred to as on-demand public transport. A discussion is held about the performance of on-demand services regarding economic, environmental and social sustainability. It is concluded that while DRT services generally in theory have potential to improve transport system sustainability, there is so far scant evidence that the reviewed on-demand services have produced... It is concluded that while DRT services generally in theory have potential to improve transport system sustainability, there is so far scant evidence that the reviewed on-demand services have produced outcomes to this end. A key explanation for this is low usage. This means that costs are high, which is problematic from an economic perspective, while the potential environmental and social benefits fail to materialize.
