We have always been modular : Modularity as production paradigm for music in platform society
(2024) p.291-303- Abstract
- The chapter examines and draws comparisons between modularity as a foundational production paradigm across code, platform society and electronic music production. It delves into the evolving landscape of music production within the context of platformization, highlighting the growing prevalence of modularity influenced by genres such as hip-hop and EDM. Additionally, the chapter explores how interface-based practices, networked production and the impact of platforms like TikTok are fostering a new era of intermedial music production. This has given rise to a distinct format: The short, modular and intermedial clip which plays a pivotal role in shaping contemporary music production and culture.
