Abstract
The particle da- is used in various Arabic dialects to express a range of modal, future, progressive, habitual, optative and final functions. The present article analyzes the use of the particle da- in the dialect of Aleppo, for which it has thus far only been mentioned with a future and modal (want) function. An analysis of already published recordings from Behnstedt, along with one previously unpublished text, finds that da- in Aleppine Arabic indicates a much wider range of functions that mirror the particle’s variability in neighboring Anatolian and Iraqi dialects.
