Abstract

In an increasingly interconnected and digitalized global world, organizations are confronted with a growing range of complex crises. The COVID-19 pandemic, the war in Ukraine, environmental disasters resulting from climate change, global financial crises, and misinformation campaigns are just some of the contemporary global developments presenting significant organizing challenges. Positioned at the intersection of strategic communication theory and performative perspectives of communication, the contributors of this edited volume focus on the various ways in which organizations, strategies, and other organizing phenomena are constituted through communication in relation to global crises. The first section of the book attends to crises at the global level, exploring different ways of understanding crises and proposing new directions for crisis communication research. The second section focuses on how strategies for responding to global crisis situations are communicatively constituted with consideration of the complexities of negotiating particular responses. The third section examines the implications of communicative strategies for globalization, morality, and politics. Overall, this book underscores communication as the practice when examining the interplay between organizing, strategizing, and global crises and offers novel insights into how organizations attempt to act ethically and ‘do the right thing’ in times of crises.
