In interaction with children, pictures are often used to facilitate communication, but the child does not understand pictures as adults do; that is as signs. Empirical studies on picture understanding in the child are primarily carried on within cognitive science and developmental psychology but in these studies the principal questions concerns different aspects of child cognitive development not the picture sign. Thus considering the learning from these studies I elaborate my empirical work within a semiotic perspective focusing on the picture as a semiotic resource and the child becoming sign-minded. In my talk at IASS/IAS X Conference some of my studies conducted on preschool children (18-36 months old) in Sweden will be discussed. (Less)
