New barriers and new possibilities : confronting language inaccessibility in and around a pandemic

Abstract
This chapter explore cases of language inaccessibility through examples from before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The examples illustrate inaccessibility of information during daily press conferences, hin- drances to, as well as possibilities of, digitalisation of education, and language barriers emerging through the widespread use of closed captioning for pre-recorded online lectures. Although the examples are from Sweden, the issue of language inaccessibility considering the particular groups affected – the deaf, the hard-of-hearing, and people with cognitive disabilities – will bring together aspects of what perpetuates and pervades inaccessibility in respect to communication that are relevant for a wider audience.
