The Influence of Redundant Structural System Characteristics on the Value of SHM Information

Thöns, S. LU (2015)
Abstract
This paper addresses the influence of deteriorating structural system characteristics on the value of structural health monitoring (SHM) before its implementation. The value of SHM is calculated within a recently developed framework utilizing the Bayesian pre-posterior decision analysis modelling the structural system performance, the integrity management, the structural risks and the SHM information throughout the life cycle. The paper focusses on the structural system and component performance influence on the value of SHM with the SHM strategy load monitoring. The value of SHM is quantified as the difference between the life cycle benefits with and without monitoring utilizing a generic structural Daniels system formulation, the... (More)
This paper addresses the influence of deteriorating structural system characteristics on the value of structural health monitoring (SHM) before its implementation. The value of SHM is quantified as the difference between the life cycle benefits with and without monitoring utilizing a generic structural Daniels system formulation, the decisions rule reliability based inspection and repair planning and the adaptive actions inspection and repair. The structural system performance is modelled considering a yearly discrete structural resistance reduction due to fatigue deterioration. The results indicate that the value of SHM is strongly influenced by the component reliability, comparably moderately by the resistance correlation and conditional moderately by the deterioration correlation between the structural components.
