However, mental health services have traditionally been limited to addressing custodial and clinical aspects of recovery. This narrow view of recovery prioritizes physical safety and security while addressing symptoms via medical and psychological treatments. People living with mental health issues and their families have stressed the need to broaden what services offer and facilitate other elements of recovery. This includes reducing power imbalances, working toward personally defined recovery goals, and supporting personal, social, cultural, and spiritual elements of the process. This chapter outlines different elements of recovery, including recovery as an embodied process. The relationship between sensory processing and principles of recovery-oriented practice are discussed, followed by an overview of the use of sensory modulation in recovery-oriented service delivery.
