- This panel explores the political dynamics of memory and heritage-making in nationalist and counter-nationalist narratives in the contemporary Middle East. It explores how historical narratives are constructed by probing the rhetoric and aesthetics of both material and immaterial cultural heritage: from iconic personages, symbolic events and national myths to specific artifacts and museum displays. It seeks to analyse how these narratives are presented and performed in both formal and informal memory spaces in the region.
