An investigation of teachers' attitdues towards poetry

Abstract
Research has shown that teachers’ attitudes towards poetry have the power to affect their teaching ability and impact education. International studies suggest that teachers possess mostly positive attitudes towards poetry and view it as an important part of English language education. However, a lack of research within the Swedish context has left us reliant on conclusions drawn from international studies. Research has shown that teachers’ attitudes towards poetry have the power to affect their teaching ability and impact education. International studies suggest that teachers possess mostly positive attitudes towards poetry and view it as an important part of English language education. However, a lack of research within the Swedish context has left us reliant on conclusions drawn from international studies. This thesis aims to add to that context and contribute knowledge about three constructs: Swedish English teachers’ attitudes towards poetry, their attitudes towards teaching it, and their perception of their knowledge of it.
Through a quantitative questionnaire containing twenty-one close-ended questions, the attitudes of fifty-one English teachers in Sweden were explored. The findings show that most of the responses on all the constructs were positive. Most teachers valued poetry, both in general and in terms of its teaching benefits. The results simultaneously show that poetry is one of the most difficult topics of English language education to teach according to the respondents. Consequently, while many of the findings are in line with international research, they give nuance to the Swedish context and highlight some lesser-known factors that influence teachers’ attitudes towards poetry.
