The future of natural fibre production in Sweden, understanding the challenges and opportunities faced by the actors

Abstract
New EU laws, policies, and strategies establish that European fibre, textile, and fashion producers
must transform to operate more sustainably. This need for transformation raises numerous questions about the
future of the European fibre, textile, and fashion industry. This thesis aims, through a case study approach
explore the experiences and perspectives held by producers and other industry actors in Sweden who are engaged
in natural fibre production, particularly cannabis production. The thesis seeks to enhance our
understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by those involved in this work. It presents three

future of the European fibre, textile, and fashion industry. This thesis aims, through a case study approach
explore the experiences and perspectives held by producers and other industry actors in Sweden who are engaged
in natural fibre production, particularly cannabis production. The thesis seeks to enhance our
understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by those involved in this work. It presents three
main takeaways: first, the sector in Sweden requires better coordination; second, many actors within the industry
have responded to the requirement for transformation with an approach referred to here as
"making the best of a situation". This approach denotes how many actors have sought ways to create
circular systems around existing materials, rather than pursuing bio-based fibres like cannabis.
Finally, intermediary agents should act as risk managers or risk-takers, guiding the industry forward. (Less)
