Introduction: In this thesis, I critically examine three discourses, prevalent within the 'field' of sexual violence in migration.
Methodology: Taking a poststructuralist approach, I deconstruct the beforementioned discourses in a threefold analysis.
Results: I find, that the binary gender system is still dominating, and that certain ideas about 'men' and 'women', their bodies and sexualities, which can be traced back to imperial times, are still at play, however in slightly modified ways. These ideas, contribute to the continuous construction of women as victims of sexual violence, and men as perpetrators – especially Muslim men and men of colour. I also find, that sexual violence, hereunder rape, since ancient Rome has been described as 'a destiny worse than death' – an idea that, still to this day, influence the construction of migrant women, with experiences of sexual violence, as victims in need of help. The transitional justice industry plays an active role in the victimisation of migrant women with experiences of sexual violence.
Conclusion: I argue for the need to 'shake up' and diversify stagnant discourses at play in sexual violence in migration, in order to make way for other realities and subjectivities. (Less)
