- Aim: There is currently no comprehensive overview of how speech and language pathologists (SLPs) in Sweden manage patients with functional dysphagia. Therefore, the aim of this study was to map how Swedish SLPs manage patients with functional dysphagia and how they experience working with this patient group.
Method: This study is a surveybased cross-sectional study. Data were collected from licensed SLPs working with patients with functional dysphagia. A total of 29 participants completed the survey. Descriptive data analysis was conducted, and responses to open-ended questions were analysed using an adapted approach inspired by thematic analysis.

Results: The results demonstrated considerable variation in how patients with functional dysphagia are managed within Swedish speech and language pathology praxis. Many participants reported a lack of guidelines for assessment and treatment. Variations were also identified in referral pathways, assessment and treatment approaches, and whether patients had undergone a complete medical evaluation prior to contact with an SLP. Participants described several challenges in working with this patient group, including the absence of guidelines, limited access to psychological expertise, complex comorbidities, and patient-related factors such as motivation and understanding of the diagnosis.
Conclusion: The study highlights the need for greater consensus regarding the management of patients with functional dysphagia and the development of clinical guidelines. The findings also indicate that a multidisciplinary approach, including access to psychological expertise, may be beneficial for this patient group. Further research in this area is needed.
