Abstract
The aim of the Master’s thesis was to evaluate the performance of two existing
extraction nozzles at Nederman, and to use the findings to create a concept for a
new nozzle. The purpose of the new nozzle was to be attached to a welding cobot,
resulting in a change in requirements and design possibilities.
The project followed the product design process as described by Ulrich and Ep-
pinger, consisting of identifying customer needs, establishing target specifications,
creating and selecting concepts, among others. The data gathering process primar-
ily consisted of analyzing existing findings in the area and conducting interviews
with experts. Following the data gathering, standardized test setups were created,

ily consisted of analyzing existing findings in the area and conducting interviews
with experts. Following the data gathering, standardized test setups were created,
reflecting real-world conditions. Digital models were created of the respective noz-
zles, and their believability was verified through physical testing. CFD simulations
were performed, in order to analyze the performance of the respective nozzles at
varying positions, working distances, and air volume flows.
Following the results from the simulations, additional discussions were conducted
with experts, combined with a customer visit and further research regarding cobot
welding. Using the findings, concepts of a cobot nozzle were created. The con-
cepts were evaluated using screening and scoring matrices in an iterative process,
where new concepts were created following the new findings. From the concept
development process, it was clear that either freedom of movement or operating
cost would be the limiting factor of the design.
Since no current solution exists in the field of study, it is yet to be seen which
factor will be most important. Because of this, two final concepts were created,
each mainly focusing on solving one of the two challenges. Even though it is early
in the development process, the two proposed concepts provide clear indications of
where to continue development, depending on where the priorities of the industry
will lie in the future. (Less)

(More)

Isåfall hittar du den under titeln “Study of efficiency of welding fume extraction nozzles”.
