Travel Surfboard Case

Abstract
Surfboard bags are precious cargo. At least, they are to the traveling surfer. The
anonymous baggage handler tossing that bag into a plane’s undercarriage? Not so much. Hence why, all too often, there are horror stories of broken boards by airlines, surf trips ruined, and angry social media posts.
As a surfer I have encountered the uncertainty of whether my surfboards made
it in one piece to my final destination when travelling. Today´s surf travel bags fail to properly protect surfboards when travelling. Through this project I explored how to reinvent the surfboard travel bag. Leading me to develop a hard shell surfcase that offers a higher grade of protection than the traditional surfbags.

anonymous baggage handler tossing that bag into a plane’s undercarriage? Not so much. Hence why, all too often, there are horror stories of broken boards by airlines, surf trips ruined, and angry social media posts.
As a surfer I have encountered the uncertainty of whether my surfboards made
it in one piece to my final destination when travelling. Today´s surf travel bags fail to properly protect surfboards when travelling. Through this project I explored how to reinvent the surfboard travel bag. Leading me to develop a hard shell surfcase that offers a higher grade of protection than the traditional surfbags.
The design consists of a hard shell case, which fits up to three shortboards, accessed from the side opening. The shell is made from PC Makrolon, a higher end polycarbonate recognized for its robustness, finish and recyclability. It is reinforced with an elliptical rib, highlighted by the texture contrast between matte and high gloss finish on the top and the rubber elliptical foot on the bottom.
The large and robust wheels are easily removable for cleaning or replacement purposes, as well as protected from the harsh beach environment by the outer fabric cover, which also acts to prevent any scratches. Furthermore the travel surfcase features 4 handles of various adjustable lengths for easier handling, both from the user and from airline personnel. (Less)
