- Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are central to the digital transformation of healthcare and are intended to support coordination, documentation, and access to patient information across healthcare settings. However, technical interoperability does not necessarily mean that exchanged information is usable in clinical work. This analysis focuses on healthcare professionals’ experiences with the findability, understandability, trustworthiness, and actionability of interoperable EHR information, as well as usability dimensions such as effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction, and human-centeredness.
The findings show that EHR systems are deeply integrated into healthcare work, but that healthcare professionals still experience fragmented systems, workflow disruption, inconsistent access to information, and reliance on workarounds. At the same time, interoperable information was perceived as beneficial for coordination, continuity of care, and access to patient information. The thesis concludes that interoperability only contributes to meaningful digital transformation when exchanged information is usable within clinical workflows and aligned with healthcare professionals’ needs.
