Abstract
Title: Silence please: Silent students' thoughts on shyness and nervousness in the classroom. This thesis deals with silent students' thoughts on shyness and nervousness in the classroom. During this study I have been talking to silent students about their experiences of being silent. After a look at the literature on the subject of shyness I have found that there the perspective of the students is lacking. My study deals with three main questions: How do silent students describe their experience of their shyness? How do silent students describe the possible training regarding oral presentation that they may be able to get? And finally, how do silent students describe their possible needs of pedagogical support? In my study I have adopted... (More)

My study deals with three main questions: How do silent students describe their experience of their shyness? How do silent students describe the possible training regarding oral presentation that they may be able to get? And finally, how do silent students describe their possible needs of pedagogical support? In my study I have adopted a qualitative method, which is a method that mainly concerns interpretation of people's thoughts. From the questions above and using an interview guide I have conducted a field investigation with five students at upper secondary school and one student at the university. I have partly used traditional interviews, face to face, and partly mail interviews for my data collection. The results I have gained are among others that the situations where my informants experience anxiety are in situations where they may be examined and valued. The informants wish to be visible in the classroom and receive more feedback from their teachers. They are worried that their grades may be influenced by their silence. They describe that they lack training regarding mental preparation before oral presentations. The informants' suggestions on the pedagogues' support are among others: fewer students in the groups, a better class spirit, to have oral presentations in front of classmates you feel secure together with, and, through having short oral presentations more often, train the ability to feel more secure when taking your rightful place in the classroom.
