Abstract
One reason why persons today wants to make their energy consumption more effective is that the energy price has increased and will probably increase even more. Another reason is that they worry about the carbon dioxide emission effects on the environment. These two motives together with the “Programme for improving energy efficiency”, PFE, initiated by the Swedish Energy Agency gave a platform for this masters thesis. The main purpose with this thesis is to create a guide that will help industries to improve their energy efficiency. Besides that the possibilities of getting help with improving energy efficiency are also examined.

If an industry wants help with increasing the efficiency of energy use it can both get it from energy companies and from so called Performance Contracting companies. The energy companies help industries with energy audits, action proposals and offer some products that can increase the efficiency of energy use. The Performance Contracting companies also offer help with evaluating and planning. Besides that they also pay for the investments that need to be done. They charge a sum corresponding to parts of or the entire energy profit that is made during the contract period.
PFE will last for five years and intends to increase the energy efficiency in
industries which consume large amounts of energy. Companies that freely participate in the programme needs to fulfil some certain requirements. If they do so they will get tax exemption on their electricity consumption. The companies that are participating in the programme estimates that the annual savings will be at least 1 TWh, which corresponds to an annual decrease of 1 million tons carbon dioxide emission according to the margin electricity argument.
Finally the guide offers simple advices on how companies quickly and simple, in certain cases more expensive, can make their energy consumption more effective, reduce their energy expenditures and at the same time contribute to a better environment. Some of the areas that are treated are lighting, ventilation, heating, engines, and load control. Most of the advices are in the help systems and not in the production process. The reason to this is that it’s often more simple to give general advices in this area. The guide also gives concrete and reality based examples on already made investments. Among other things investment costs, operation costs, repayment times and life cycle costs are presented. (Less)
