Abstract
This thesis is a fenomenological approach to percieved pros and cons of a mature ISO14001-certificate.
I've also investigated if my interviewees have expeerienced an influence from their environmental
management work to their personal environmental awareness. I also sought to see if these
Environmental Management Officers thought that their having the certificate influences the general
environmental awareness of the coworkers in any way.
The companies have been chosen on the basis of having had the ISO14001-certificate for a minimum

This thesis is a fenomenological approach to percieved pros and cons of a mature ISO14001-certificate.
I've also investigated if my interviewees have expeerienced an influence from their environmental

Environmental Management Officers thought that their having the certificate influences the general
environmental awareness of the coworkers in any way.
The companies have been chosen on the basis of having had the ISO14001-certificate for a minimum
of 2 years. The interviewees are of varying titles such as Environmental Management Officer. My
criteria for participation is for them to both possess the overall view as well as practical knowledge of
the maintenance of the system.
The result of the certificate of having an orderly environmental management system was highly valued
by all. Most importantly they stated that not having the ISO14001certificate or similar, is not an option.
The fulfillment of that particular customer demand is imperative for participation in public tendering.
Every disadvantdge was stated reluctantly and with mitigating pronouncements such as ”it is still worth
it”. Among those listed were high costs of the auditing in comparison to the feedback, sometime
disagreement with the external auditors, difficulty in stating the measurable environmental goals etc.
I concluded that even though at first everyone seemed thoroughly positive about the ISO14001-
certificate, at a closer look what was listed an advantadge, in fact turned out to be indispensable for
staying in business.
Results were interesting if inconclusive regarding the influence of work on personal environmental
values, but on the whole, the display of different ideas about the subject serve to inspire further
research. Several expressed that the relationship between work and environmental values are somewhat
symbiotic and also fed by the media.
As a byproduct of my research came the realization that the endeavour to reach sustainability, such as
stipulated in the Bruntland Report, is expressed by several agents as a cybernetic feedback loop. (Less)
