The aim with this study was to analyze and examine the factors underlying the social secretary's choice of treatment for addicts. In order to better understand the complexities in the choices social workers face when they investigate their client’s abuse and addiction to drugs, we interviewed six social workers who were active in the individual and family care. The results we got from our interviews, we analyzed using the theories; scope of action, empowerment and theory of the communicative conduct. The results of our analysis indicated that social workers had to take into account several factors, which influence their choice of intervention for their clients. These factors were largely within the organizational structure. Organizational framework set the bar for the social workers possibilities and scope of action to create individual interventions after each client’s needs. What we could deduce was also that, the economic factor was of great significance for the interventions social workers could choose from. Our social workers felt that the individual consideration of intervention for the addicts was relatively large, on the whole. But as we said, the organizational structure and economy sometimes limited the possible choices for the social worker and his or her clients. At last social workers in our examination felt that treatment was generally planned in concert with their clients. (Less)
