Abstract
To live the life you want to live – A studie about how refugees perceive local welfare authorities interventions in relation to the life they want to live.

The aim of this study is to analyze how refugees perceive the Swedish welfare authorities intervention in relation to the life they want to live. We used Amartya Sens Capability approach to analyze what intervention measures refugees consider that they need when they settle in Sweden and how these measures create possibilities for them to live the life they want. We have also analyzed to which extent the interventions give refugees the freedom to choose how they want to shape their lives. We have interviewed refugees that have been in Sweden up to five years. Our interviews was semi structured and we let the refugees have time to talk about what they thought was most important for their welfare. In these interviews we could see that the authorities and the refugees have the same goal for the refugees’ future but the authorities in Sweden do not always do what they say that they should do. Refugees say that they need employment, accommodation and to learn Swedish. All these things are the same as the authorities say that they should do but they do not always do, which diminishes the refugees’ capability to do or be what they want. The authorities’ intervention is designed from a taken for granted representation of refugee. From this starting point the authorities give the same interventions to all refugees. In our study we have been able to see diversity in the refugees’ life and needs. A diversity which do not match authorities policies. (Less)
