Abstract
The housing situation for homeless women - a qualitative study

Our aim with this study was to examine in which way social workers and local politicians view on the housing situation for homeless women in four municipalities in the south of Sweden. We interviewed in total four social workers and four local politicians from two smaller and two medium-sized municipalities. We chose to focus on homeless women to analyze if this group has different needs and other types of problems than homeless men. We also wanted to find out whom the social workers and the local politicians think have the responsibility to help this group of women to a permanent housing. To analyze our results from the interviews we used a theoretical model which describes... (More)

We also wanted to find out whom the social workers and the local politicians think have the responsibility to help this group of women to a permanent housing. To analyze our results from the interviews we used a theoretical model which describes homelessness as either a structural- or an individual problem. The other theoretical perspective we used was Talcott Parsons way of describing the society as a social system, in this social system there is a number of roles and norms which the members of the society should live up to. The conclusions of this study was that homeless women are more socially exposed and that some of them, especially women with children, do not live up to the social norms that society has established. Another conclusion we drew was that the responsibility for homelessness lies both within the individual and the society, the society has however the most dominant role to play in this matter and more needs to be done.
