Purpose The purpose of this essay is to examine trans-boundary tourism destination development through a case study of the Öresund region. This will be done through an analysis of the thoughts and opinions of some of the most important actors of the region which in turn will lead to a complete picture of the potential and competitiveness of the region. Methodology For this thesis we have used a qualitative research model. Our empiricism is based on interviews with nine of the most central actors of the Öresund region. The interviews have been significantly supplemented with secondary material based on books, articles, homepages, trade journals and marketing brochures. This information has been analyzed through our theoretical spectra dominated by “co-opetition” and Place Branding Conclusions Our conclusions are that the Öresund region has a long way to go before it becomes a recognized destination brand. The positive feature is that the destination is made up of two countries, which gives surplus to the tourist product and helps differentiate the Öresund region against its competitors. The synergy outcome of a transnational cooperation is that the common tourist product is greatly enriched and thus, more resources are available. The biggest challenge derives from the same feature as the main opportunity, the fact that the region is made up of two sovereign countries with their own political agenda that is hard to see pass in favor of a joined region. We believe that the actors in the region should continue to cooperate and compete, best summed up by “co-opetition”. (Less)
