Reading with Reference - A Study of the Limits of Formalist Criticism
(2011) LIVR07 20101Comparative Literature
Master's Programme: Literature - Culture - Media
- Abstract
- This thesis intends to point out the limits of exclusively formalist literary criticism. To locate these limits with precision the thesis contrasts the formalist criticism of Monroe C. Beardsley with the critical hermeneutics of Paul Ricoeur. The idea for this thesis is based in an experience that strictly rule-governed formalist criticism does not seem to correspond to the fullness of its object, the literary work, and hence cannot divest it of its full potential. The thesis subsequently and rudimentarily attempts to outline the form of a more fitting form of criticism.
