Abstract
This paper is a study of Vitruvius and the lifting devices he describes in his work De Architecura. I also explore what sort of education Vitruvius expected an architect to have; thereby stating that a certain level of competence was expected of the people who constructed and handled such lifting devices. By looking at which monumental buildings were constructed in Vitruvius' lifetime (from roughly 80 BC to 20 BC when he presented his books to Augustus) I want to give the
reader an idea of how common cranes were during this time. To a large extent this paper explores how common cranes were in everyday Roman life during the life of... (More)
